Every so often, you hear a song that plays in the background, you like it, you then play back again to make sure you like it, and then every subsequent time you hear it, you enjoy it that little bit more. This is most certainly the case with my latest find, which is a New York duo called Ms Mr.
They are making waves around the music blogosphere at the moment, and this has all come about after the debut release of their track “Hurricane” – which is a moody and deep pop procession.
A stomping and echoey start helps to magnify the intense gravelly female vocal on this track. Added to this, the pessimistic and self-depricating vocals such as “I’ve become afraid of the darkness in my mind”, “I never saw what you saw in me”, and “I jumped the gun, ready for the worst before the damage was done” – add to the air of negativity, all of which seems completely unfounded, until the chorus sets the scene…
You see, it is the regular chorus lyric of “welcome to the inner workings of my mind” that suggests that the song itself is an admission of how a mind can become well and truly (to use the technical term) “bollocksed”. Indeed, the title “Hurricane” sums up her mind better than any other word can. Ironically though, the song is anything but, as it boasts a perfectly regimented beat, which lends itself fantastically to the orchestral backbone throughout.
It’s worth a listen. Can they do upbeat? Who knows. But keep an eye out on this band, they’ll blow you away…
